Motor Protection Relay Uses
Where equipment malfunctions, experiences problems or begins to fault a protection relay can detect the problem early on and functions to significantly reduce any damage to the motor, or eliminate the possibility of it. When an electrical problem occurs the relay will operate to protect your critical infrastructure.
Problems can arise as a result of wear and tear and ageing but also from persistent overloading and a breakdown of insulation materials. While this is a gradual process that will not offer immediate signs, it will ultimately result in damage or an electrical fault. However, a motor protection relay can detect that something is going wrong even where the damage is slight. It achieves this by monitoring changes in voltage, current, resistance and temperature.
If things are left to escalate, overheating or overvoltage may result at which point the power will need to be interrupted. Protection relays serve in these instances by finding fault contributors. Traditional devices can only determine problems on a certain level, whereas protection relays can dig in deeper and prevent the problem from getting beyond the point of recovery and actually incurring damage.
