Until now, on-site data processing required the installation of separate hardware in addition to the routers. The RUGGEDCOM VPE1400 is a software that partitions off a separate virtual environment in the router where users can install a Linux operating system and load their own self-generated programs or those of service providers. The partitions ensure that the programs never interfere with actual router operation – not even if the programs malfunction and, for example, take up too much processor power. The virtual environment enables an application to connect via all network interfaces on the RUGGEDCOM RX1400 router – LTE, copper, fiber-optic – and with serial transmission interfaces. Special application interfaces also enable communication with devices integrated into SCADA systems for control and monitoring purposes. This new software is part of the trend toward communication networks with distributed computing capacities in which, as much as possible, data is processed on site rather than centrally. Experts are referring to “fog” or “edge computing.” Such technologies are a key requirement for integrating a growing number of devices into an ever more distributed Industrial Internet of Things and operating them efficiently.Functions & benefits at a glance:
